Aquatic Nature EVO - NH3 Ammonia remover is a matte + fine filter membrane for removing NH4-NH3 from your aquarium water. From the Aquatic Nature EVO series. Specially designed for the Aquatic Nature Evolution aquariums and filters, but also usable in many other internal and external filters.
If the degradation bacteria break down organic material, they release ammonia. Fish also release ammonia into the water (directly from the bloodstream via the gills). Ammonia is an aqueous ammonia solution. In this solution, most of the ammonia reacts with water to ammonium. The water therefore contains:
- Ammonia, NH 3 and;
- Ammonium, NH 4
The ratio between the two is determined by the pH. At low pH the equilibrium shifts towards NH4. At high pH the balance shifts towards NH3. NH3 is very toxic, NH4 much less. This means that at low pH the risks of ammonia poisoning are small, much smaller than at high pH.
Common symptoms of an excess of ammonia are algae growth and the death of cryptocoryns.
